Henderson's sees upsurge in Yorkshire retailers
Henderson Insurance Brokers Leeds (HIBL) has seen considerable growth this year in the number of Yorkshire-based retail businesses using its specialist retail division, partly as a result of the growth in Yorkshire brands nationwide.
The growth highlights the hard work and dedication of ‘Yorkshire Retail Champions’, or niche retail businesses that have been established in the recession and are now achieving high growth.
While many national chains falter and go out of business, the Yorkshire region has become a hotspot for niche retail companies that have the potential to grow as the economy recovers. Innovative retail offerings such as Moda in Pelle, a prestige womens footwear brand with headquarters in Leeds, demonstrates how Yorkshire-grown businesses can be scaled up, and can go on to be successful nationally and even internationally.
Paul Judge, Managing Director, Henderson Insurance Brokers Leeds, commented: “We’ve had a number of key contract wins in the retail sector that are experiencing high growth and have the potential to go on to achieve even greater things, creating jobs and boosting the regional economy.
“Innovative Yorkshire retailers are helping to drive the Yorkshire economy, bringing financial muscle back to our region. This is also good news because Yorkshire retailers tend to favour existing Yorkshire based suppliers and advisors. Their success is helping to re-balance the high street away from multi-national businesses, which are faltering, to distinctive home-grown concerns.”
“This will benefit the Yorkshire and Humber region going forward as the economy recovers. The diverse make-up of the Yorkshire economy is one of our key strengths and Yorkshire business people, particularly at the micro retail level, have the can-do mentality and sheer grit and determination that makes success in business more achievable.”
He added: “At a micro-level, independent shops and traders are the lifeblood of our high streets, giving Yorkshire towns and cities their character and identity. They are also an important part of the regional economy with many independent shops and stalls owned by and employing local people.”
The brokerage, whose Yorkshire headquarters are located at Trueman House, Capitol Park in Leeds, has enjoyed a turnover in excess of £6m in the last financial year while the group’s revenue increased to £22m last year.
