Steppingstone Group to develop The Beatles' birthplace

Cheshire developer Steppingtone Group has been selected to renovate one of Liverpool’s most iconic historical sites; the birthplace of The Beatles in Quarry Street, Woolton.

The location has been voted as the best place for families to live in the whole country, and a multi-million pound investment will see Steppingstone develop a variety of different homes on the site.

The developer, who is based in Helsby, said the project could add to the conservation of the area with an “exclusive approach to delivering contemporary living space”.

Steve O’Connor, partner at Steppingstone, commented: “The focus has been on the best use of design to create maximum light and living space and this is the reason we decided to bring in an independent architect.

“We wanted total design control and to be involved in a fantastic redevelopment project.”

The business will work alongside Merseyside architects Falconer Chester Hall, who will design 10 boutique homes for the scheme.

Mark Doohan, director of the architect firm, said: “There is a limited amount of choice within the housing market as far as new homes are concerned and it was important for us to develop for Steppingstone new and unique housing that was high quality design and specification yet still affordable.

“This project aims, in design terms, to fuse the heritage character of the conservation area with the desire for open-plan contemporary living space.

“To achieve this, large format doors and windows which allow natural light to reach deep into the houses have been incorporated and we have also used creative layout solutions to ensure the privacy of residents is protected. Unique courtyard gardens and terraces have also been created.”

The scheme will include both terraced and detached houses, all with their own garden space and private parking.

The second phase of the Steppingstone development will be the refurbishment of the former Village Inn pub into a five bedroom house.

Work start on the site in summer 2012 and the first homes will be ready by the end of April 2013, which the public can view the homes on Saturday 20th April.
