Group Rhodes secures contract on £750m waste facility

Group Rhodes has just signed a contract to engineer and build an integral part of the new £750m Wakefield PFI waste management facility.

One of Europe’s largest original equipment manufacturers, Wakefield-based Group Rhodes has signed a deal with Shanks Waste Management to engineer and build the bulk materials handling apparatus and giant steel pressurised autoclave vessel, which will sit at the heart of the new waste management plant.

Lawyers from Wakefield’s Beaumont Legal advised Group Rhodes throughout the project and negotiated the contracts for the engineer’s unique and critical part of the £750m project.

Senior partner and head of commercial at Beaumont Legal, Roy Cusworth, said: “This is a major strategic project for the Wakefield district involving leading waste management technology.

“Group Rhodes is one of the country’s few specialist contractors capable of delivering the precision engineering required for this landmark project. We are proud of our association with them and were pleased to assist in concluding these vital contracts.”

The new facility will extract recyclable materials and generate energy from by-products resulting in vast savings on waste going to land fill.

The publicly funded PFI project led by Midlands waste management firm Shanks, which will handle more than 220,000 tonnes of waste annually, is to be built at South Kirkby and is expected to be ready for operation in 2015.

Wakefield Waste PFI Limited will provide the waste recycling services over a planned 20-year period.
