Saving jobs for NE businesses all adds up

A North East accountant has reached a significant milestone after reaching 30 years in the business and safeguarding over 20,000 local jobs during his career to date.

With his unparalleled insolvency experience, Tait Walker partner Gordon Goldie has worked with upwards of 5,000 companies since his first case in 1983, ranging in size and complexity, from large corporate insolvencies to personal bankruptcy, across a variety of sectors.

Past president and current member of the North East branch of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, today Gordon heads up the Tait Walker’s 14-strong corporate recovery team providing insolvency advice on all manner of formal and informal related matters.

Gordon said: “It’s been an inspiring and sometimes challenging 30 years – particularly working with companies which are dealing with financial difficulty, however this of course comes hand in hand with the territory.

“The past few years have been particularly fraught for UK businesses in general and the North East economy in particular has been hit hard, but knowing I have safeguarded someone’s job is beyond rewarding and is what keeps me getting out of bed each day – that and never knowing when the phone will ring next – it certainly keeps me on my toes!”

Since joining Tait Walker in the early 1990s, Gordon has proved to be an invaluable member of the management team single-handedly setting up the company’s corporate recovery department, which is now one of the most successful in the region.

In addition to his role as partner with Tait Walker, Gordon is also responsible for the company’s HR department and is committed to implementing apprenticeship training programmes across its three offices in a bid to open up the tax profession as an accessible career route to young people in the North East.

Awarded Employer of the Year at the 2012 Accounting and Finance Awards in recognition of its staff-centric approach, the firm currently employs over 130 staff across its three North East offices.

Gordon concludes: “I’ve no wild plans for marking this milestone other than simply watching the Newcastle away game with friends. It’s been a memorable thirty years and I’m looking forward to what the future with Tait Walker will bring.”
