Chester regeneration plans opened to public

The public have been invited to view Chester’s ‘One City Plan’ development strategies across various projects and schemes which will be revealed in the Town Hall next week.

Information on Chester’s bid for the City of Culture for 2017 will be on show along with ambitious plans for the surrounding waterways.

Chester’s canal system and surrounding rivers will be developed to contribute towards growth, investment and the leisure economy on the River Dee and the Shropshire Union Canal.

One City Plan is a 15-year strategy that will regenerate the city through public and private investment, which will fund development activity across Chester’s many historical, business and leisure landmarks.

The bid to become City of Culture 2017 has now been submitted, and a decision will be made in June and announced by the end of 2013.

Executive Member for Culture and Recreation, Councillor Stuart Parker, said: “I would encourage all residents to come along to a drop-in session and find out more about how to get involved.

“There’s so much going on in Chester at the moment and our bid for City of Culture 2017 is a fantastic opportunity for the city to build upon its lively cultural events programme.

“Chester boasts an unrivalled history, the most complete city walls in Britain and the unique Victorian Shopping Rows, all of which makes it a popular tourist destination.

“With further developments planned for an exciting new theatre, Chester has much to offer and to gain from being chosen.

“The UK City of Culture is more than just a title - it’s an opportunity to build local pride, show the world who we are and what we can do and we are asking members of the public to show their support and back the bid.”

Drop-in session are to be held every second Tuesday of the month between 4.30pm and 6.30pm in Chester Town Hall, beginning on the 14th May.
