Retro games aim to drive town centre footfall

Retro video games are set to arrive in North Tyneside town centres as part of a scheme to drive people to high streets.

North Tyneside Council are launching several pop-up classic video games lounges in Wallsend, Whitley Bay and North Shields.

The council are hoping to replicate the success of a recent four-day video gaming show held in Margate, which attracted national press and television news coverage.

Special multi-player setups will be created on Saturday May 18 including games such as Mario Kart, Goldeneye, Micro Machines and Bomberman.

Councillor Eddie Darke, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: “This latest town centre event gives people a chance to come along and play classic video games with their friends and families, and also see what our town centres have to offer.”

The one-day event takes place between 10.30am and 4pm in the Forum Shopping Centre in Wallsend, Park View Shopping Centre in Whitley Bay and the Beacon Centre in North Shields.
