Morgan Sindall celebrate Birmingham Airport award
North West property developer, Morgan Sindall has secured the Project of the Year accolade from the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) for its work at Birmingham Airport.
The firm, which has offices in Liverpool, Manchester and London, completed work on the airport’s £10m Air Traffic Control tower in June 2012 and received the award at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham at the beginning of May 2013.
Morgan Sindall also won the Regeneration Award at the ceremony for the RICS West Midlands Awards, which recognises the most impressive property developments in the region.
Designed by CPMG Architects, the tower stands at 111 ft tall, with seven storeys and is one of the tallest unstayed control towers in the UK.
The building is supported by a slip form concrete process, which required the construction team to pour concrete continuously for 12 days while the cab was prefabricated off-site.
Michael O’Callaghan, director of aviation at Morgan Sindall, said: “Airport control towers are often some of the most striking and dramatic buildings on the skyline, and the tower at Birmingham Airport is certainly no exception.
“We are delighted it has been justly recognised in this way. Morgan Sindall has extensive experience in aviation building projects and the construction of this impressive tower is testament to the skills of the team working in highly-technical airport environments.”
The air traffic control tower is the fifth significant project taken on by Morgan Sindall at Birmingham Airport, which included the completion of the £13m One Terminal project in 2011, which combined the airport’s two terminals with a large security area, meeting point and improved retail and restaurant spaces.
