JPG completes work on £20m Carlsberg bottling plant

West Yorkshire-based civil and structural engineering consultancy JPG has achieved completion of a new bottling plant for Carlsberg Northampton Brewery.

The £20m project is now ready for the fourth largest brewer in the UK to expand its production capacity.

JPG was appointed to the project by Caddick Construction to assist with the design and delivery of a new 75,000 sq ft building to provide a new production hall and lower level car park.

This has enabled Carlsberg to double its production of brands including Carlsberg, Carlsberg Export, Carlsberg Special Brew and San Miguel beers to ten million bottles a year.

Gary Howarth, director at JPG said: “We have a successful history with Caddick which brought us in because of our considerable experience in food and drink production facilities.

“The tight programme and short lead in from instruction required close co-operation with all of the design team and JPGs experience of BIM was crucial to the design and production of drawings.

“The flat slab design of the bottling hall had to consider numerous different loading combinations due to the extensive and various process plant, services and internal walkways required for production.

“To facilitate the cleaning and production process, our experience in the use and specification of stainless steel drainage, and products to deal with the chemicals and high discharge temperatures from effluent drainage was invaluable to the success of the project.”

Carlsberg UK is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Carlsberg Group and employs around 1800 people across the UK. Amongst its sites are the company’s two main breweries based in Leeds and in Northampton.

Established in 1988 by joint managing partners Chris Harding and Gary Howarth, JPG works across all market sectors, from warehousing to student halls of residence, office blocks to country house restorations.
