Average offices have 21m of cables per person
The average small UK office contains more than 20 metres of cable from electrical equipment, per person, according to new research by cable management experts at manufacturer D-Line.
Based upon measurements in offices ranging from two to 14 regular occupants, the research shows that the “wireless age” is a myth and that safety and aesthetics issues relating to cables are as important as ever.
The research looked at wiring and cables from in-situ products, such as computers, telephones, printers, televisions, servers and card payment machines.
The products using non-trunked cables also included technology often considered redundant, such as fax machines, and even, ironically, wireless routers.
Paul Ruddick, founder of D-Line, which sells its products in major retailers across the UK, as well as in 20 global markets, said: “Health and safety, as well as aesthetics, are vital aspects of office life, so cabling is an issue on a number of levels. On average, we found that for every regular occupant of an office there was 21 metres of cabling – it would take Usain Bolt a couple of seconds to run that distance in full sprint. So much for the wireless age.
“Office life invariably depends upon technology, but the mess and safety hazards that come with it are as important to consider.
“A tidy office creates a good first impression to visitors, including clients, while the time which can be wasted untangling cords or cleaning around cables can be put to much more valuable use on your business’ core activity.
“Cable management is hugely important in the office, and advantages in technology are clearly not making it any less of an issue.”
D-Line manufactures contemporary cable covers, which are designed to give an aesthetic solution to wiring in the office.
Paul said: “Eight years ago, after 15 years of working as an electrical consultant, I grew tired of the problem, not only on a personal level, but being unable to answer clients’ questions about an easy, attractive solution to wiring. I decided on a career change and invented D-Line. Even since then, the problem has become more pronounced, with new advances in technology such as Blu-Ray players and Wii consoles.”
