Youngsters to snap engineering feats in photo competition

3 June 2013: The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and the Building Research Establishment (BRE) are inviting budding photographers around the UK aged 8-19 to submit images that best capture “future thinking” civil engineering for its 2013 Future Cities photo competition.

Photos entered can capture a range of infrastructure - from tall buildings to waste facilities, roads and railways, through to water treatment plants, dams and energy infrastructure such as wind turbines or hydro-electric generators. The challenge to entrants is to capture an image that conveys the functionality of civil engineering but that also encapsulates excitement, inspiration and innovation.

The competition was launched at the recent 2013 Big Bang Fair - the largest celebration of science and engineering for young people - and is aimed to capture the imagination of youngsters and get them thinking more about how buildings are designed and constructed and how innovation in the design and technology used in new structures is helping to build better, greener towns and cities for the future.

ICE President Professor Barry Clarke, whose presidential year focusses on attracting the engineers of tomorrow, said: “If we want world class cities and infrastructure in the future, we must have a world class workforce to deliver it. This competition is challenging young people to view the world around them differently. We hope it will prove to be a fun and engaging way to get youngsters excited and interested in civil engineering as a career and help them understand how civil engineers really do shape the world in which we live.”

There are three competition age categories: 8-11 years, 12-15 years and 16-19 years. Winning images will feature on the ICE website and be displayed at ICE’s London headquarters – the international home of civil engineering.
