Matfen Hall team completes C2C Challenge

A team from Northumberland golf and spa hotel, Matfen Hall, has successfully completed the Coast to Coast (C2C) cycle route in just two days, raising £3,500 for Cancer Research UK.

Rob Foster, Leisure Club Supervisor and Talieh Bonner, Spa Assistant Manager, put the team together to both improve fitness and raise money for charity.

To make the 147-mile route from Whitehaven to Tynemouth even more challenging, they set a goal of completing it in two days instead of the standard three.

Members of the 18-strong team included General Manager, Bernard Bloodworth, and staff and members from Matfen Hall’s leisure and golf clubs, some of whom had very little cycling experience before undertaking the challenge.

The popular C2C route was opened in 1994 and attracts more than 12,000 cyclists a year, taking in the stunning scenery of the Lake District and the Northern Pennines.

Spa member Barbara Rowley was one of the participants. She said: “The main reason I wanted to take part in C2C was to raise as much as possible for Cancer Research. I have had two different types of cancer diagnosed within three months, and without the research already undertaken I would not have survived.

“Cancer is something that touches everyone, so I’m really pleased that we have all done our bit.”

Bernard Bloodworth commented: “I’m thrilled that we successfully completed the route in only two days, but it was hard work! We were lucky with the weather and had fun along the way, plus of course the money we raised will go to a very worthwhile cause.

“Thanks to those who sponsored us and well done to everyone on a fantastic team effort. Incredibly, one dedicated team member even completed the 147 miles with a broken arm, which she only found out afterwards. Here’s to the next challenge!”
