Health and safety landmark for Yorkshire construction business

A major health and safety landmark has been achieved by a North Yorkshire civil engineering and construction business.

A total of 500,000 hours free of RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations) has been achieved by S&B Utilities, in spite of one of the busiest periods in the company’s history.

RIDDOR refers to serious accidents and other occurrences on construction, maintenance or development sites which must be reported to the Health and Safety Executive.

As S&B Utilities has 60 staff, including 45 on site fulfilling a range of contracts for utility companies and private businesses, the landmark equals 3.8 operational years without a dangerous incident.

The 500,000 RIDDOR-free landmark comes only months after S&B Utilities gained a Tier II Contractor Award 2012 for its health and safety record from Yorkshire Water Services when the business had achieved 400,000 RIDDOR-free hours.

The Yorkshire Water Services award, in which S&B Utilities came top from scores of contractors, recognised the company’s safe working policy and procedures, its investigation process and all-round pro-active approach to health and safety.

S&B Utilities senior contracts director, Darren Swales, said: “A good health and safety record is an important hallmark of a top quality business and is the result of a continuing programme of business and staff development which incorporates vigorous training in all aspects of health and safety, including all aspects of creating a safe environment and the proper use of equipment and materials.”

S&B Utilities, which is based at Scotton, near Knareborough, was established in 2002.

The company’s current services include civil engineering, metal fabrication, building and maintenance, feasibility studies and design for customers including Severn Trent Costains Ltd, Yorkshire Water Services, University of York, Taylors of Harrogate, PPP Infrastructure, Yorkshire Agricultural Society, Driffield Showground and HM Prison Service.
