OM Logistics Improves Application Development Efficiency by 30%
OM Logistics, the leading Indian logistics company, has successfully modernized its OM Track & Trace Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) application using software from Micro Focus, (LSE: MCRO.L), the leading provider of enterprise application modernization, testing, and management solutions. By moving its OM Track & Trace application from Micro Focus Server Express to Micro Focus Visual COBOL for Eclipse, OM Logistics can now create and deploy enterprise class COBOL applications to new platforms like .NET, Java Virtual Machine (JVM), UNIX, Windows, Linux and the cloud. The implementation has already improved development efficiency by around 30 per cent.
OM Logistics has built a considerable reputation by linking all the supply chain elements and providing a single window logistics service for 500 clients in the corporate and multi-national automobile industries. It delivers transport, warehouse and logistic support, focusing on just-in-time supply and highly organized goods flow.
Commenting on the modernization initiative, S.K. Goel, Vice President of Information Technology at OM Logistics said: “We require significant IT support to deliver the goods, but our Track & Trace application, which supports the company’s core business modules including accounting, reporting, warehousing, HR, payroll and consignment tracking, was unwieldy and outdated. We wanted to dramatically improve the maintenance and development of our COBOL applications with a more productive application development toolset. Visual COBOL for Eclipse delivers a contemporary, industry-standard developer experience that exploits our existing investment in COBOL-based applications, enabling us to re-use our mission-critical applications on a new business platform and innovate for the future.”
“We now have a new, more flexible and cost-effective platform for development and we can support new interfaces and technologies quickly and easily,” added S.K. Goel. “We opted for Visual COBOL to be in-line with the latest technology and move towards mobile and cloud development. We are now planning to develop a valuable new mobile application, which is particularly important for consignment tracking.”
“Preserving the business logic and existing application investment in its Track & Trace application was a top priority for OM Logistics,” said Ed Airey, COBOL Product Marketing Director at Micro Focus. “By enabling the company to carry forward proven business rules to a new contemporary development architecture, Visual COBOL for Eclipse has put the power to reinvent COBOL applications firmly back in OM Logistics’ hands.”
