Manchester business group supports Wigan entrepreneur

Wigan entrepreneur Steven Hunt has launched a new start-up with the help of business support group Blue Orchid.

Atherton Craft Workshop produces wooden items such as bird boxes and feeders which are sold to a range of outlets, with plans to make higher value products in the future.

Mr Hunt set up his business with help from Blue Orchid after being unemployed for several months and suffering from a number of health issues.

He became the 2,000th business to receive support from the group across Greater Manchester, which is funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

Mr Hunt commented: “I was referred to Blue Orchid and my advisor, Chris Halliwell, by the Job Centre. Chris was able to help me turn concepts and ideas into a structured, plausible business plan.

“The enthusiasm from Chris really helped boost my confidence that this idea for a business may succeed. The support I have received … has been superb. There is never a doubt that he is reachable should I need a steer on a particular issue. Add to that, with his experience, Chris has ‘been there done that’ in terms of new businesses and his advice has proven invaluable.”

Blue Orchid’s managing director, Heather Hayes, added: “At present, there is a real need to create more sustainable employment opportunities, so it’s fantastic that we’ve been able to help so many people like Steven to grow and transform their ideas into viable, prosperous businesses.

“By sharing best practice ideas and investing in young companies in this way, we aim to boost the local economy and create more jobs for people in the region.”

Chris Halliwell from Blue Orchid commented: “I am really impressed with the work that Steven has put into the business. I see an individual that has increased his confidence and self-esteem.

“The quality of his work is to a very high standard and his commitment to his business holds no boundaries. I am proud to be his business advisor and do see his business having further growth in the future.”
