Contract opens apprenticeship door to Dean

A deal to replace fire doors in Newcastle tower blocks has kept the apprenticeship door open for trainee joiner Dean Denwood.

Construction and property repair specialist, AH Property Services, secured the contract with Your Homes Newcastle (YHN) – safeguarding the jobs of around 10 people, including the 18-year-old from Westerhope.

With several of his college friends having to quit apprenticeships due to loss of work Dean, who is about to begin the final year of his training, said: “This is great news which means I can continue training for a job I have wanted to do since I was about 12.

“I always enjoyed the challenge of building things. Lego was one of my favourite toys as a kid and I knew by the time I was 13 that joinery was what I wanted to do. I was lucky to get the chance to follow my ambition when I left school and this news takes a weight off my mind.

“I thoroughly enjoy my job and this contract will give me experience in a new area I’ve not tackled before. All being well I will complete my training in September next year.”

The fire door programme begins at Hexham House in Walker later this month where 46 fire doors and frames in communal areas will be replaced. A further two high rise residential blocks will be included in a pilot project designed to test the water for a bigger programme of works to other tower blocks across the city.

Business Development Director with AH Property Services, Keith McDougall, said: “This is the second project we’ve secured with YHN in open competition in recent months, providing us with an opportunity to build a closer working relationship with a major player in the North East housing sector through the quality of our work.

“It also means that the team delivering the project has extended job security and that Dean can continue with his apprenticeship.”

AH Property Services operates from a head office on the North Tyne Industrial Estate in Newcastle and a base at the Riverside Industrial Park in Middlesbrough.
