Stamp of approval for SCM Pharma

SCM Pharma’s new £6m pharmaceutical contract manufacturing facility has been given the go ahead for commercial production following a successful inspection from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

The company’s new 26k sq. ft. site in Newburn complements its nearby clinical manufacturing facility in Prudhoe and will primarily be utilised for the supply of licensed medicines to clients and patients across the world.

Since work began on SCM Newburn, the award-winning drug-maker has delivered a major jobs boost to the region by increasing headcount by over 40% to 110 people to ensure the new facility is ready to go when the doors open for business this summer.

Dianne Sharp, managing director at SCM Pharma, said: “The official MHRA approval of our new facility is a huge landmark in the history of our company and heralds in a new era for our team.

“I’d like to thank all those involved in the planning, design and construction of SCM Newburn as the end result is what I believe to be one of the finest contract manufacturing facility of its type in Europe, which is fantastic for our region.

“Our business is deeply rooted in the North East and we feel very proud that Newburn will become a hub for the production and supply of licensed drug products to help patients worldwide.”

Founded in 2004 by non-exec Chair and renowned female entrepreneur Fiona Cruickshank OBE, SCM Pharma specialises in the sterile production of drugs destined for clinical trials along with licensed medicines required by patients in niche markets.

The new site is able to handle highly potent, flammable and toxic products along with controlled drugs. It houses technology for aseptic filling and terminal sterilisation capabilities and will allow the company to fill drug products into ampoules, vials and syringes.

The new site massively increases SCM Pharma’s current and future capability and capacity and includes a range of packaging and labelling areas, temperature controlled warehousing, raw materials and engineering preparation, visual inspection and leak testing.
