£2.3m Teesside project rises from the Ashes
Work has started on a £2.3m ash processing facility on Teesside.
The new site, at Stockton-on-Tees, will have the capability to process 200,000 tonnes tons of ash every year.
North East civil engineering and construction firm Owen Pugh has started work on the project at Haverton Hill, on behalf of recycling and resource management company SITA UK.
The facility, which is expected to be complete by early 2014, will replace the existing plant which processes incinerator bottom ash from the energy-from-waste process, from which metals are extracted and the residue is utilised as an aggregate in construction projects.
Work will include the construction of an 18,000m2 concrete hard standing area, a new access and egress entrance off Haverton Hill Road, all associated drainage including a new lagoon and a new screen around the perimeter of the site to satisfy the Local Authority Planning Department.
Owen Pugh Construction, which has a proven track-record in overseeing a range of technically challenging projects as a main contractor, will utilise its design and project management capabilities to carry out the works, which will take until December to complete, at which point the works on the process equipment will begin.
Craig Burdis, construction project manager for SITA UK, says that Owen Pugh were the right fit for the scheme.
He said: “Health and safety is a key priority for us and Owen Pugh’s approach to site safety is aligned with our own high standards.”
The Owen Pugh Group has five sites across the North East including its HCS Drain Services division which is located in Stockton. Owen Pugh’s head office is situated in Dudley, Northumberland.
The firm’s chairman John Dickson said: “We’re extremely pleased to have secured this important project working with SITA UK.
“The new facility will play a vital role in recycling waste and producing aggregate that can be re-used in the construction process.
“This is another opportunity to position ourselves as a leading main contractor, delivering projects on time and within budget, and is also a chance to build upon our portfolio of projects in the south of the region.”
