Chesterfield Special Cylinders launches German company

Sheffield-based Chesterfield Special Cylinders (CSC) has opened a German company, Chesterfield Special Cylinders GMBH, at its first overseas office, as part of an expansion programme designed to capitalise on favourable market conditions in mainland Europe and Scandinavia.

CSC has a turnover of £17m and exports around 75% of its products.

Mick Pinder, managing director at the global cylinder manufacturer, said: “By forming a GMBH – a German limited company – we are making it as easy as possible for customers to do business with us in Germany and beyond.

“It demonstrates our long-term commitment to this growing market, giving a confidence boost to major customers such as navies and oil and gas companies that they can source direct from CSC the leading edge high pressure gas containment systems they rely on.

“Our main European rival, Mannesmann, recently entered insolvency and the launch of CSC GMBH coincides with our employing the leading sales and technical staff in the German cylinders market and addresses any cultural and language issues we may have faced.

“We are already in talks with the German Navy and with the main players in the European gas transportation sector. Our presence in German underpins our future in mainland Europe.”

The company has recruited two key managers from Mannesmann to drive the new business. Axel Mohnhaupt, has joined as sales manager and Michael Ulber as head of its German design and engineering team.
