Apprentice Paul shows a cutting edge
Building and roofing specialist, Hodgson Sayers, believes the future of one of its brightest apprentices - Paul James - is ‘nailed-on’ after he made the regional heat of the Construction Industry Training Build (CITB) Skills Build event.
Paul represented the North East of England at the regional heat held in Leeds.
The Stanley-based company, is renowned for developing young talent and this was highlighted when 21–year old Paul from Consett, County Durham, recently took part in the event.
The CITB, is the Sector Skills Council and Industry Training Board for the construction industry. It annually hosts the event, as a way of applauding and recognising talented individuals within the construction industry.
Paul, said: “I am really enjoying working at Hodgson Sayers. I have been here for a year now, and was thrilled to have made the regional heats of the national event, which was held at Leeds College.
“It was a nerve-wracking day as I had to demonstrate my skills, by re-setting a plain tile into a bonnet hip and a valley, nine other competitors were taking part and we were judged on the spot!
“Although I did not make the finals, it was a great surprise to be put forward let alone to represent the region, I did not expect this.
“As part of my apprenticeship, I study for a Level 2 NVQ in Roof/Slating and Tiling. I found out about the apprenticeship and applied for it via the CITB, who offer a range of courses.
“For three months of the year, I study the NVQ at Newcastle College where I learn the theoretical side to the job. To be able to get hands-on experience and a qualification will set up my career!”
Managing Director at Hodgson Sayers, John Sayers, said: “I am delighted at Paul’s success. Apprentices such as Paul play a crucial role within our business and we work very closely with the CITB who help us to seek out high-calibre apprentices.
“We regularly appoint apprentices and have a great support and mentoring system in-place to help them settle in and learn the skills they need to become fully qualified roofers and building specialists.”
Brian Myers, apprenticeship officer at the CITB, said: “Paul applied for his apprenticeship through the CITB. His drive to succeed was apparent and along with his college tutor we nominated him because of his fantastic attitude and great practical skills.
“Paul is a first year student and it is normally only second year pupils who enter such awards. However, his talent has stood out to me from day one and he deserves to have a pat on the back and be recognised for his continual hard work and determination.”
“As Paul head’s into the final year of the NVQ, I know he will have a very bright future within this sector.”
Established in 1979, as Hodgson & Allon, the company began primarily as a roofing contractor. Over the years it has developed and diversified considerably to include building works, fencing and metalwork fabrication.
Its ISO 9001 accredited operations are reflected in the consistently high standards of delivery, presentation and all processes.
