Leeds engineering consultancy completes Prestatyn Retail Park

Leeds-based civil and structural engineering consultancy JPG has completed works on a significant new retail park in Prestatyn, North Wales.

The 11-acre Prestatyn Retail Park, hailed as a renaissance for the town with major tenants including Tesco, Marks & Spencer, Next and Boots and more than 650 new jobs created, was recently opened by local dignitaries and schoolchildren.

JPG was appointed to consult on the project during planning stages in 2007 due to its expertise in working with difficult ground conditions where specialised solutions were needed.

Kevin Wheldale, project manager at JPG said: “We faced a challenge from the onset as the brownfield site is located in an area where a layer of peat exists, and we had to specify a system of deep soil mixing that is a new technique in the UK.

“We used deep soil mix columns and deep load transfer platform utilising a system developed in Finland to deal with large peat deposits. “This avoided the need for excavations and the export/import of significant amounts of fill material, which was impacting considerably on project costs and construction traffic flow on local roads.”

The scheme developer was Stadium Developments Ltd and the principal contractor was Marshall Construction West Yorkshire Ltd.
