Improvements made to Teesside train station

Work has started on the first phase of a programme to improve facilities at a Teesside train station.

Carillion is carrying out the work, on behalf of Network Rail, to improve Dinsdale Station in Middleton St George, near Yarm.

The improvements made to date include new CCTV cameras, new shelters and seating which will provide a safer, more comfortable place to wait.

New customer information screens and a new public address system with audio loop will provide passengers with up-to-date arrival and departure information.

Other improvements made in phase one of the project include resurfaced platform areas and clearer signage at the station entrance.

In addition to these improvements, the number of trains stopping at Dinsdale has been increased to two per hour throughout the day, providing regular fast and direct links into Darlington and Middlesbrough.

The improvements are being funded in part by the Tees Valley Metro Project which is dedicated to upgrading rail stations across the Tees Valley area.

Councillor Lyonette, Darlington Council’s Cabinet Member of Transport, said: “Dinsdale station is a key stop on the Bishop Auckland to Saltburn railway line and provides a cheaper, easier and more convenient form of transport for many people.

“These improvements mean that Dinsdale residents can now enjoy the benefits of modern station facilities right on their doorstep.”

Further improvement works at the station will include resurfacing the access ramps to each platform and adding hand rails to improve accessibility.

Some of the trees and shrubs around the station that currently obstruct some of the lighting will also be removed to improve visibility and create a brighter, more open space.

This work will take place later in the year and forms part of the Dinsdale bridge replacement project, which is also part of the plans to upgrade the line.

The bridge replacement works, which are being carried out in partnership between Network Rail and their contractors Carillion, may cause some disruption to local residents due to a part road closure on Middleton Lane.
