Former Grant Thornton head sets up new consultancy

John Shinnick, the former head of accountancy firm Grant Thornton in Manchester and Liverpool, has left the firm and established his own consultancy, Shinnick LLP.

The new practice is based in Manchester and will advise SMEs on a broad range of business issues including growth and mergers.

Mr Shinnick started his career with KPMG in East Africa, before joining Grant Thornton in Manchester in 1987 and was appointed partner in 1992. He stood down from running the Manchester office in 2007 to take over running the firm’s entrepreneurial advisory team across the North West.

He said: “I will use my skills and experience to help like-minded people – business people who want full-on collaboration. They tend to be approaching points of change; growing, changing direction, or incorporating new ideas. The contribution I can make lies between Non-Executive Director participation and CEO coaching.”

“Many businesses want to access an active senior management resource without permanently increasing their team. I provide that resource. I have 21 years as partner in a fantastic firm; all spent working with dynamic people to make their businesses great. I have the technical capabilities and expertise that come with an accounting background, but my focus has increasingly been on commercial negotiation and strategy and getting the very best out of people and teams.”
