IHC Engineering Business welcomes its largest group of university placement students

A Northumberland-based Engineering company is providing valuable experience to some of the country’s best young talent, by taking on its largest ever group of university placement students.

IHC Engineering Business, the designer and manufacturer of equipment for the offshore industries, has provided placements in a variety of positions for 16 students at its Stocksfield operation, from a variety of the UK’s universities.

Students from universities including Edinburgh, Newcastle, Manchester and Belfast will be taking part in placements ranging from between two months, to a full year. The programme also welcomes students from the Open University and Newcastle College.

Jane Hudson, HR Manager at IHC Engineering Business, said: “IHC EB is committed to providing placement opportunities for university students alongside its apprenticeship programmes.

“We recognise the importance of helping to develop the next generation of entrants to our industry and the practical real-world experience gained on placements is invaluable in the career development process for prospective engineers.

“This is a marvellous opportunity to gain experience as part of a very forward thinking and innovative company. The energy industry holds considerable opportunities for engineers and this placement will give them an excellent grounding for any future career.”

It is not only engineering students who will be taking advantage of the experience either, with students of English Language, Computer Science and Physics also enrolled.

Rachael Sowerby, on placement at IHC in Sales and Marketing, said: “IHC’s placement programme is fantastic for students like myself, due to its diverse range of experience offered across the business.

“The energy sector is flourishing and although engineers form its core workforce, there are plenty of opportunities in roles such as marketing where I can develop my skills.”

IHC EB welcomes applications for student placements for 2014 from October 2013 onwards. Engineering disciplines include mechanical design, electrical systems and control systems. IHC EB has an excellent track record of recruiting engineering undergraduates who have worked with at the company on placement once they graduate.

IHC EB’s Graduate Management Development programme is accredited by the IMECHE so is a professional scheme, and together with continuing professional development throughout their career, the programme is incorporated into the learning and development culture at IHC EB.

Students from other disciplines should also look at IHC EB’s website (http://engb.com) for details as to where to send a CV and covering letter, which should detail the type of placement they are interested in. IHC EB will explore other opportunities available at that time.
