The Freeman Hospital undergoes specialist operation

Specialist building and roofing contractor, Hodgson Sayers, has undertaken a £500,000 refit of the roofing of two of the wards at the world famous Freeman Hospital, Newcastle.

The 800-bed hospital is managed by Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and is one of the UK’s main facilities for OrganTransplantation.

The Stanley-based company won a competitive tender to replace the roofing on the operating theatre ward and on the cardio ward.

John Sayers, Managing Director at Hodgson Sayers, said: “Our Contracts Manager, Colin Howey, headed up a 13-strong team, five of whom worked on the operating theatre undertaking a full roof replacement, removing the existing copper and fitting a copper felt cap sheet.

“We also had a team of eight working on the roof of the cardio ward to provide waterproof liquid plastic roofing in asphalt.

“This has been an extensive and rewarding project to work on given the nature of the life-saving activities that take place on both wards. Strong winds have, at times, proved challenging for the team but they are very experienced.

“We have also ensured minimal disruption for staff and patients and have enjoyed working on the project and seeing the end-result.”

Rob Sanderson, Trust Chief Building Officer, said: “Freeman Hospital site is part of the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals Foundation Trust. The Trust takes great pride in our high quality maintenance regimes. We use products that are traditional and offer a good life-cycle.”

Established in 1979, as Hodgson & Allon, the company - which became Hodgson Sayers in 2013 - began primarily as a roofing contractor. Over the years it has developed and diversified considerably to include building works, fencing and metalwork fabrication.

Its ISO 9001 accredited operations are reflected in the consistently high standards of delivery, presentation and all processes.
