Printing services firm making its mark

Strong growth in demand from the SME sector is propelling a Greater Manchester computer to recruit additional staff.

Printerland styles itself as the UK’s largest reseller of printers and consumables, offering products from major brands including OKI, Xerox, Epson, Lexmark and Brother.

The firm was founded in 1993 and now has 35 staff based at its Altrincham headquarters where it has a call centre and a demonstration showroom. Four new recruits have been enlisted in the last month.

Founder and managing director James Kight readily acknowledges that more than 90 per cent of Printerland’s sales are to small and medium-sized enterprises.

Turnover for the year to March 31 was £22.7m and the firm is “on target” to achieve £28m in the current period.

Mr Kight said: “Our target market is very strong. We have a massive customer base and we are not reliant on big contracts.

“People are printing more than ever before and a lot of that is driven by legislation. For example, employment contracts are much longer than they used to be.”

The company is enjoying significant growth in demand for its managed print services, where customers pay a fixed monthly fee to cover all their printer costs.

The company has just opened its first overseas office in Capetown, South Africa, with the prospect of more openings ahead.

Mr Kight said: “We have been able to replicate what we do here in South Africa and the office has taken off nicely on the back of the growing market there. It is already making a small profit and will be a good testing ground for us.”
