Water safety top of the agenda for Leeds businesses

Businesses based alongside the River Aire are being offered advice and training on different aspects of water safety tomorrow (August 20th).

The Leeds City Council-led Riverside Safety Working Group will be a hosting a session at Granary Wharf at 10am for those working at all local businesses based by the river to raise awareness about the value of water safety and what to do in case of an emergency. The session will feature a demonstration by the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service at the riverside of how to correctly deploy ‘throw lines’ into the river to help anyone in the water.

Chair of the Riverside Safety Working Group, Councillor Richard Lewis who is also Leeds City Council’s executive member for economy and development, said:

“Sadly, too many of us are all-too-aware of the dangers water can pose. The knowledge and advice being shared at sessions like this is invaluable, especially for those living or working near the river.

“You never know when this knowledge may be needed to save a life, so the more people who know what to do in case of an emergency the better. I’d encourage as many people as possible to attend – we are looking forward to a good turnout.” The Leeds Riverside Safety Working Group is made up of Leeds City Council, Canal & River Trust, Aire Action Leeds, West Yorkshire Police, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, as well as the University of Leeds and Leeds Metropolitan University student unions.
