Smith Electric strike Taiwanese deal

Washington-based Smith Electric Vehicles is set to team up with a Taiwanese manufacturer to produce electric vehicles overseas.

Smith has signed a letter of intent with Taikang Technology Corporation in Taiwan which establishes a licensing agreement, covering assembly and distribution of all-electric vehicles in the country.

The joint venture will secure a 5,000 vehicle commitment over the first three years of the deal, a number of which will replace much of the Taiwanese municipal garbage truck fleet.

The move aims to open up new markets for Smith and will also create a number of jobs in Taiwan.

Bryan Hansel, CEO of Smith Electric, said: “This is another significant milestone for Smith. With this letter of intent, we are eager to complete our first ever licensee agreement for the Company.

“Smith Electric plans more licensee agreements to support its long-term global growth strategy to meet growing demand for fleet transformation through electrification around the world.”
