High-profile strategic appointment fuels growth for Howard Civil Engineering

Gary Lumby MBE has been appointed to the board of Howard Civil Engineering Ltd, to help drive continued expansion for the £17 million turnover construction business.

Lumby, a former UK Director of SME Banking at Clydesdale and Yorkshire Bank, is the first non-executive director of the 120-strong Leeds business, which has posted a 70 per cent increase in turnover in the last 12 months.

The milestone coincides with a raft of prestigious contract wins for Howard Civil Engineering, which includes the Groundworks package for both the £90 million Monks Cross development on the edge of York, creating 1,000 jobs, and the new Arla Distribution Diary in Aylesbury, the world’s first billion-litre plant providing the world’s first zero-carbon milk processing facility.

Managing Director, Michael Howard, who founded the business in 2003, said: “We are bringing Gary on board at a formative period when we have a number of significant developments across the UK in the pipeline.

“With plans to significantly expand the team as further new contracts go live, Gary’s powerful track record as a non-executive director, coupled with his depth and breadth of financial and non-executive expertise, will strengthen our board and be instrumental in our ambitious growth strategy.”

Gary Lumby added: “The improvements we are witnessing in the construction sector – reinforced by the volume of high quality commissions from end user clients and main contractors, reflect the strong potential for Howard Civil Engineering to further expand its Yorkshire and UK wide portfolio.

“I will initially be adding value by helping the senior management team to maximise the wealth of opportunities to be harnessed.”

Mr Lumby holds several Non-Executive Chairman and Director roles in companies across the North. He was awarded the MBE in 2008 for services to the Financial Services Sector.
