Adderstone secures permission to build on Tyne Bridge site
North East based property developers, Adderstone Group, have secured planning permission to build premium office space in an iconic location next to the Tyne Bridge on Gateshead’s Quayside.
Planning permission was secured for the prominent scheme, located on Bottle Bank next to the Hilton Hotel on the Gateshead side of the River Tyne, following an 18-month process which included an appeal after planning officers’ initial recommendations for approval were rejected by Councillors.
Permission was granted by the Secretary of State this month for the two-storey commercial development with views across the Newcastle Gateshead Quayside and developers, Adderstone, are keen to secure an end user to work with on the exciting development which will be a huge opportunity for a business looking to occupy one of the most prominent positions in Newcastle Gateshead.
The 259 m2 (2,787 ft2) development will provide very high specification office or commercial space with unprecedented views of the Tyne Bridge and the River and those interested in being involved in the scheme will also have the opportunity to add their suggestions to the final design build.
Computer generated proposals for the development include striking artist’s impressions of the building, created by Intersect Architects based in Newcastle city centre. Intersect have worked with Adderstone throughout the process to develop a design that, on completion, will achieve a BREEAM ‘very good’ rating ensuring a considered and sustainable approach to the build.
Julie Booth, Director of Intersect Architects said: “Our aim throughout the design process has been to integrate the new building into its existing setting and provide a distinctive, contemporary structure in this prominent location.
“The form has been derived from the truncated buildings typical of this area of Gateshead, and materials selected to reflect the industrial heritage of the site. Highly visible from Newcastle Quayside and the Tyne Bridge, the building provides flexible office space in a landmark location.”
Adderstone Group CEO, Ian Baggett said: “The appeal decision was in many ways a foregone conclusion but it was still great news. We lost an excellent tenant and subsequently dozens of construction jobs were lost because the Council Members decided to go against the advice of their own Planning Officers. Despite this, we are satisfied to now be able to bring another regeneration and employment opportunity to the region.”
