Engineering firm makes the going good at the races

A fast-acting Teesside engineering company helped save the day for race-goers when a water pump broke down just days before a big meet.

Sedgefield Racecourse had been preparing the ground for the ‘Miles for Men’ race day when managers found that an irrigation system had failed.

With the race on to prepare suitable jumping conditions, in stepped Hartlepool-based C&A Pumps and Engineering to carry out repairs and reinstall water supplies.

Sedgefield Racecourse Manager Jill Williamson explained: “As we are still in the summer jumping season, we have to aim for good ground due to strict jump racing regulations.

“At this time of the year, you get the faster ground horses with the owners giving them a run out before the weather changes and the ground becomes heavy. So there was a bit of concern when we realised the pump had failed especially as it was just a few days before the meeting.

“But C & A Pumps were excellent and were quickly able to immediately identify and repair the problem, meaning there was no disruption whatsoever and the race meeting could go ahead.”

C&A Pumps and Engineering, based at Queens Meadow Business Park in Hartlepool, has been providing electrical and mechanical installation services for Sedgefield Racecourse for several years.

Managing director Alan Roberts said: “One of things we pride ourselves upon is our emergency maintenance services – the impact of an electrical or irrigation system failing on a business can be horrendous.

“This was exactly one of those incidents when the racecourse realised it needed to get the irrigation system repaired immediately, otherwise the meeting was at risk.”
