Moves to speed up Burnley regeneration grants procedures

Work to transform the Weavers’ Triangle in the centre of Burnley, is picking up pace following the opening of the University Technical College in a renovated mill.

Now Burnley Council is set to agree a move that will help speed up grant applications to the Heritage Lottery Fund for money to help fund that regeneration.

The council’s executive is being asked to approve a HLF grants application process that will help ensure key projects are delivered on time.

The council expects two or three applications for lottery grants to help pay for work, such as that taking place on Sandygate Mill and Slater’s Terrace.

Until now any applications for grants over £100,000 had to be approved by the executive. Under the new process approval would be delegated to senior council managers rather than needing to go to committee.

Councillor Shah Hussain, executive member for regeneration and economic development, said: “The transformation of Victoria Mill into the University Technical College, which was part funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, shows what can be achieved in terms of regenerating the Weavers’ Triangle.

“There is much more to come and we need to make sure that officers can act quickly and effectively to access grant money to help fund the work.”
