Newcastle's pop-up MarketPlace for youngsters is launched

A new pop-up business market that will give young traders and start-ups the opportunity to showcase their talent has been officially launched in Newcastle - by Elswick ward councillor Habib Rahman.

Over 360 people visited launch of the pop-up market event, The MarketPlace, at Space2 on Clayton Street.

Organised and funded by Business Sparks along with Solar Learning, Space2 and Newcastle Enterprise Club, The MarketPlace allows new business start-ups and young traders to test trading conditions in a city-centre location with a high footfall.

Business Sparks development officer Hannah Morrow said:“The event was a great success and has the potential to be even better. We will be running the event on every second Tuesday of each month.

“The MarketPlace provides a fantastic opportunity for young people with a great business idea or a new start up business to test trading conditions in a real-life, affordable and minimal risk environment.

“Not only that, The MarketPlace provides great exposure for each business and an opportunity for the traders to get a taste for selling direct to customers, face-to-face.”

Businesses that took part include; Hafi Arts, which sells original artwork, Opulent Mehndi, sold henna designed gifts, iGifts and Great Time Events party planners. Customers were also able to purchase milkshakes from Shake It Up and henna artists Trendi Mehndi offered free henna for children under 16.

As well as The MarketPlace, to celebrate the launch there was children’s activities, stilt walkers, face painting and entertainment.

The MarketPlace venue, Space2, is a city centre youth facility - sponsored by NE1, the city centre Business Improvement Agency and delivered by Solar Learning Services and YMCA Newcastle.
