New South Cumbrian school buildings open

Furness Academy’s new £22m school buildings have opened, marking the first time all students and staff have been based on one site.

Built by the Bedfordshire-based Kier Group, the new three-storey academy building will accommodate up to 1,200 pupils.

The state-of –the-art complex boasts 3D learning, a recording studio, dance and drama suites as well as an indoor sports hall, multi-use games area and an all-weather sports pitch.

Head boy Robbie Simpson said: “It’s really good that we have all been brought together in one new school. We are using the maps to help us make our way around the building.”

Chairman of governors Ted Creighton said: “This is something the educational sponsors have been looking forward to for some time.

“This is a really exciting time for everyone who has worked hard to try to get a brand new secondary school building for Barrow. It will make a real difference to have everyone together in one hub, with the latest technologies and all the staff working as one team.”

The new facilities were built on a playing field on the old South site of the academy, near Barrow Park.

The academy replaced Barrow’s Thorncliffe, Parkview and Alfred Barrow secondary schools, when it was established two years ago.

It is sponsored by Furness College, the University of Cumbria and Barrow Sixth Form College.
