Cheshire empty property scheme gets boost
A scheme to turn empty properties in Macclesfield into flats has been given a £60,000 boost.
The In Town Living partnership project group was set up by the Cheshire East Council in March to explore ways to ‘unlock’ the potential for unused space over shops and businesses in the Chestergate area of Macclesfield to provide residential flats.
Now a £60,000 Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) grant will be used to renovate about four properties to get them back into use as homes.
Private landlords, who are struggling to raise money for refurbishments, are now being urged to contact the Council to work in partnership to turn empty properties into flats.
Councillor Don Stockton, Cheshire East Council Cabinet member in charge of housing, planning, economic development and regeneration, said: “This scheme is a fantastic opportunity to bring empty properties above shops and offices back into residential use. “This could really help put a vibrant beating heart back into the town centre and help support local businesses. This project will not only provide much-needed housing but also help revitalise the town centre – and, in particular, boost the evening and night-time economy.
“We now want private landlords to contact us and get involved in this exciting and innovative project.”
The In Town Living project not only aims to increase residential accommodation and increase the number of people who live in Chestergate but also attract greater investment into the town centre, boost trade for local shops and businesses and improve people’s sense of security on the streets.
The project group includes representation from Cheshire East Council, registered housing providers Peaks and Plains and Contour Homes (part of Symphony Housing Group) and local shop owners. The group works together to seek funding for the scheme.
The £60,000 grant was awarded to Contour Homes from the HCA’s empty homes programme.
Local ward Councillor Janet Jackson said: “With the recent change to housing benefits the need for smaller units and in particular one-bed flats has never been greater. I welcome this scheme, which goes some way to answering that need.
“This project is just one example of many initiatives for the regeneration of Macclesfield, to create a lively, bustling town centre for the benefit of all residents and visitors.”
