Cavern Club "not up for auction"

Liverpool’s legendary Cavern Club, where The Beatles frequently played in the sixties, has denied reports that the venue is for sale.

The adjacent Cavern Walks Shopping Centre is to be auctioned next month, with a guide price of £1million.

The Cavern Walks retail centre comprises of 23 retail units, including ones occupied by Vivienne Westwood and Cricket, as well as seven floors of office space above.

Previous owner, Warner Estate, filed for administration last month.

Allsop is to hold the auction in London next month.

Cavern City Tours director Dave Jones said: “The Cavern Club would like to clarify the misleading features that have recently appeared; the operational business of the Cavern Club is not up for sale by auction.”

The Beatles played the Cavern Club 292 times, from February 1961 to August 1963.

The venue became an iconic focal point during the rise of Mersey Beat and the pop scene, with performances by The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks and John Lee Hooker among many others.

Although the present club is a replica of the original, in recent times it has hosted live shows by top artists such as Arctic Monkeys, Stackridge and Adele.
