North East civil engineers awarded ICE membership
Three North East-based civil engineers have been awarded respected Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) professional qualifications.
John Roper has been awarded ICE Fellowship, with both Charlie Bell and Kevin Bulman being awarded membership to the ICE.
John, who lives in Cramlington, is a project director for Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd, while Charlie, from Newcastle and Kevin, from Winlaton, work as civil engineers at Mott MacDonald and Balfour Beatty in Newcastle upon Tyne, respectively.
Respected internationally, ICE Fellowship is the highest grade of ICE membership and a benchmark for those practising at the top level within the civil engineering profession.
To be awarded ICE membership, civil engineers must complete a rigorous programme of professional development and meet all the requirements of the ICE’s Professional Review. Both Charlie and Kevin are now entitled to add the letters ‘MICE’ to their names.
Penny Marshall, ICE North East Interim Regional Director, said: “I would like to congratulate John on gaining his ICE Fellowship, which is an exceptional achievement, and I am delighted to welcome both Charlie and Kevin as professionally qualified ICE members
“Achieving these highly-respected accolades recognises a significant contribution to the civil engineering profession from each individual, and are fantastic personal and career achievements.”
John said: “It is a great honour to have been awarded ICE Fellowship, which is a great acknowledgement of my career development over 40 years. I became an engineer because I was always fascinated by seeing construction projects developing into part of our everyday life, whether it be a road a bridge or a building. The civil engineering profession offers wide and varied choice of careers paths and is an exciting environment in which to work with interesting challenges set by each new project.”
Charlie said: “I am delighted to have been awarded membership to the ICE. Throughout my career I have been involved in managing the design and delivery of various projects, including the £2.2m Teesville Flood Alleviation Scheme in Middlesbrough and the £1.6m Acklam Road Screening Structure in Thornaby, which has given me great experience and enjoyment.”
Kevin added: “Working on a civil engineering project from initial conceptual design through to completion on site, makes civil engineering one of the most satisfying industries to work in, and I am thrilled to have been recognised with membership to the ICE.”
The opportunity to join ICE is available to civil engineers, technicians and technical/scientific specialists at every stage of their professional career, from students and apprentices to senior board directors.
