TNT Post to roll out service across Greater Manchester

TNT Post, the UK’s largest private postal operator, is extending its delivery service to Greater Manchester from November – a move which will create up to 1,200 jobs.

The group, a subsidiary of privatised Dutch operator PostNL, began trialling its stand-alone service in April 2012 in London and has now picked the area for its first stage of a national roll-out.

Since its London trials began, TNT Post has created more than 1,000 jobs and expects to reach 20,000 across the UK, covering 40-50 per cent of the country.

TNT Post intends to create 11 delivery units in Manchester, Trafford, Salford, Wigan and Bury, enabling it to deliver to all households and businesses within the M postcode.

It has already started recruiting, and the jobs will include delivery and back office roles.

TNT Post chief executive Nick Wells said: “We are passionate about creating new job opportunities for the people of Greater Manchester and delighted to make this announcement.

“The postal industry is undergoing great change and I am proud that TNT Post is able to create new jobs for people who need them and also to provide career opportunities for those who want to progress in a growing company.”

Inward investment agency MIDAS, which acts on behalf of Greater Manchester’s 10 local authorities, has been seeking to attract TNT Post to the area for the past year, and advised on locations for their11 offices.

The agency’s chief executive,Tim Newns, said the move would “have a hugely positive impact on economic growth and job creation across nine out of the 10 local authorities”.

TNT already has a large distribution centre in Warrington and will use it to sort mail for the new service. Previously, it sorted parcels and letters and then supplied them to Royal Mail for general delivery.
