Major upgrade project for Liverpool hospital

Funding has been approved for a £35m revamp of a hospital in Liverpool.

The project at Aintree University Hospital in Fazakerley will create one of the most modern accident and emergency departments in the region.

Builders BAM Construction Ltd says the project will create around 1,000 jobs. The firm has pledged to recruit local workers where possible.

The new-look emergency department will be housed in a new two-storey facility named the Urgent Care and Trauma Centre.

The centre – scheduled to be complete in 2016 – will also house critical care, theatres and the fracture clinic, all together under the same roof, which means patients with multiple medical needs can be treated in the same location and, therefore, more quickly.

Currently about 85,000 patients a year attend A&E at the hospital.

Chief executive Catherine Beardshaw said the investment “represents our commitment to providing world-class care for all our patients”.

More than half the funding - £20m - came from the Foundation Trust Financing Facility with the remainder from the trust’s capital budget.

The trust has already built a new operating theatre and link road to improve ambulance access.
