Brewer raises a glass to recycling deal
Hartlepool’s business of the year has teamed up with one of the town’s most famous names to help reduce its environmental impact.
J & B Recycling has been appointed to manage all waste from Camerons Brewery, which has been a commanding presence in Hartlepool since opening in 1865.
The deal was struck after managers at Camerons realised there was more they could do to increase the amount of waste recycled from the site.
The brewer is now on course to achieve its aim of sending none of its waste to costly landfill sites.
Martin Dutoy, director of packaging and brewing at Camerons, said: “Previous to using J & B Recycling for all our waste management services, things were not as efficient as they could have been and we certainly weren’t recycling as much as we could.
“It was our aim to have zero waste sent to landfill and I am delighted that we have achieved that accreditation after just a few months with J & B Recycling.
“The first thing they did was to come in and carry out a waste audit to identify how much more material we could be recycling.”
J & B Recycling, which was named Hartlepool Business of the Year for the second time in 2013, now operates weekly collections from Camerons including all manufacturing waste, such as drums and tins which contain hop extracts.
All of the waste is then processed and recycled at J & B’s Material Recycling Facility (MRF) just half a mile away.
The partnership is the latest flagship contract J & B Recycling has secured with other well-known businesses in Hartlepool, with Middleton Grange Shopping Centre and housing provider Vela Group also amongst its customers.
J & B Recycling recycles approximately 100,000 tonnes of waste each year from household, commercial, industrial and construction sources including dozens of pubs and clubs across the North East including several tenanted Camerons pubs.
Managing director Vikki Jackson-Smith said: “Camerons has a clear commitment to reducing its landfill waste to zero and our processes have ensured that target is now being met.”
