World medical conference brings experts to Liverpool

ACC Liverpool will host thousands of international cancer experts at a medical conference, bringing £5.7m in economic benefit to the city.

The International Meeting of the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO), which is Europe’s leading non-profit gynaecology oncology society, will run for four days from this Saturday (19th), bringing 2,500 delegates from more than 60 countries.

The event comes just two weeks after the waterfront venue, home to BT Convention Centre and Echo Arena, hosted another major international medical event. Eurospine saw a gathering of 3,500 top surgeons, healthcare experts and industry professionals from around the world, raising £5m in economic impact for the city.

ESGO delegates, including gynaecological oncologists, researchers and students, will descend on the city to learn about new developments in the prevention, treatment and study of gynaecological cancer.

City ambassador Dr John Green, senior lecturer at the University of Liverpool, consultant medical oncologist at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and ESGO board member, worked with the Liverpool Bidding Partnership to bring the society’s biennial conference to the venue, having previously been held at locations including Berlin, Istanbul and Milan.

He said: “I’ve attended this important event in many worldwide locations but was eager to bring it to Liverpool for its 18th meeting to take advantage of the city’s assets as a world leader in cancer care. The excellent facilities at ACC Liverpool, which was able to accommodate us, as well as the support and services throughout the city, make it the perfect combination for a successful conference.”

Kate Currie, interim manager of Liverpool Convention Bureau, added: “This is another coup for Liverpool and ACC Liverpool, when we can show off the best of the city to a large group of influential visitors.

“Liverpool’s city ambassadors are an essential element of our success as a business tourism destination and Dr Green is the latest example of an expert in his field identifying a global conference and persuading the organisers to bring it to the city.

“Liverpool Convention Bureau is delighted to work in collaboration with these excellent advocates in order to enhance our international profile and most importantly boost economic benefit to the city.”

Kerrin MacPhie, director of sales at ACC Liverpool, added “To host two high-profile international events within the same month speaks volumes about the city’s strengths in the medical sector and helps to support our aim to be recognised as a global convention centre.”
