Durham’s newest driver samples County’s newest road!
County Durham’s newest road has been inaugurated by Durham’s newest driver.
Seventeen-year-old Dan Curry, who lives in Spennymoor and only passed his test a few days ago, was selected from new drivers in County Durham to mark the completion of a highways project at County Durham’s leading regeneration project, DurhamGate.
As part of the regeneration of the site a new road system has been introduced to connect key housing and commercial areas of DurhamGate to the surrounding existing road network.
Dan, who works for Aspect Joinery, inaugurated the roads, which includes the DurhamGate Boulevard, Eve Lane and Arlington Way, by driving a brand-new 63 plate Citroen DS3 Cabriolet provided by Croxdale Motor Group.
He also acted as chauffeur to Councillor Neil Foster, Durham County Council’s cabinet portfolio holder for Regeneration and Economic Development, who was given a tour of the new highways.
Dan said: “I didn’t expect this to be one of the first things I did when I passed my driving test, but I am very proud to have been chosen.”
The completion of the highways is an important milestone in the creation of DurhamGate and the regeneration of the local area.
Created through a partnership between Carillion Developments, part of Carillion plc, and regional property business, Arlington Real Estate, DurhamGate has already attracted in excess of £45million of committed investment.
It is already home to businesses employing a combined workforce of more than 1,000.
Allan Cook, Director of Arlington Real Estate, said: “The new roads are an important element of the regeneration of this area and this was a great way to highlight the impact DurhamGate will have on the local area in the future.
“We are creating a new and vibrant community here, which will be a great place to live and work.”
Cllr Foster added: “This development is very important to the County and our plans to enhance business investment and housing stock for local people.”
