Sedgefield Racecourse welcomes two new apprentices to their team
Two young people are given the opportunity to join the racing thrills at Sedgefield Racecourse after being taken on as apprentices in September.
Megan Shutt, 20 from Trimdon, joined as a Sales Apprentice and is attending Middlesbrough College on a weekly basis completing an NVQ Level 2 in Retail. Megan will learn customer service skills, sales techniques and how to organise events for clients of Sedgefield Racecourse.
She said: “I am really enjoying my role at Sedgefield Racecourse so far. I hope to have the opportunity to progress and further develop my commercial knowledge whilst building confidence in providing excellent customer service.”
Jack Cranson, 19 also from Trimdon, joined as a Groundsman Apprentice and is attending Houghall College one day per week completing a Level 2 Diploma in Work-Based Horticulture (Sportsturf-Greenkeeper). Jack will learn everything about turf care from fence and hurdle maintenance to renovation and repair of the track.
He said: “I’ve always been interested in horticulture and I feel really privileged to have been given this opportunity at Sedgefield Racecourse. I hope to gain lots of experience within my 20 month apprenticeship and potentially have the chance to continue my career here.”
Jill Williamson, General Manager at Sedgefield Racecourse said; “We are delighted to welcome two new members to the team at Sedgefield. We are one of the first racecourses to commit to apprenticeships within ARC (Arena Racing Company) and hopefully this will give the idea to other racecourses within the group to look at this opportunity in the future.”
