The 21st Century engineers
The boss of a Teesside engineering firm says a new bit of kit has moved them into the 21st Century.
Family-owned Dormor Machine and Engineering, which has been operating in Tees Valley for more than 30 years, has splashed out £500,000 on a new CNC machine.
The company, in South Bank, Middlesbrough, made the investment with a £70,000 grant from the RGF’s Let’s Grow Programme.
Works director Paul Moore told Bdaily: “This will move us into the 21st Century, allowing us to meet the capabilities and capacities that customers are asking of us in the marine sector.
“The marine sector is going to be massive over the next two to three years, and we’re hoping to be a part of that sector in a big way.”
The new CNC machine will increase productivity and enable the precision engineering company to take on new staff at its 1,200 square metre workshop on Dormor Way in South Bank.
Director Helen Cameron-Clarke said: “It’s absolutely fantastic for the company going forward.
“We’ve just built a huge extension which has doubled our workshop and we have large contracts going forward for the next two years, in the marine sector.”
Dormor, who this year were awarded their 14th Annual Presidents Award from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, will take on additional machine operators and increase their apprenticeship intake.
The firm’s application to Let’s Grow was supported by Local Enterprise Partnership, Tees Valley Unlimited (TVU) and Evolution Business and Tax Advisors LLP.
TVU business engagement manager Peter Shields said: “It’s a very important project, particularly for this company but more importantly, I think, for the economy in South Bank.
“This is a local company employing local people, feeding into what is a very important supply chain and which is really quite critical to the economy.
“So this kind of investment is fantastic news for the area.”
Councillor Mark Hannon, Economic Development Portfolio Holder at Redcar and Cleveland Council, added: “We’re very proud that Dormor, which has been a real testament for the area for so long, is looking long-term by expanding and continuing to support the local workforce.
“We look forward to hearing of new contracts and new opportunities coming their way.”
