Shout Out UK claims to ’open the minds of the voiceless generation’, providing latest and breaking news, political analysis and more since July 2012. It professes to be Britain’s fastest growing independent global news network. Executive director and founder Matteo Bergamini takes Bdaily behind the business.

1. What key challenges has your company recently faced?

Being a website that is going into print in 2014, our biggest issues were funding (as with everyone) and of course the myth that print is dead. Yes, certain print types are going to die out, current affairs newspapers for instance are on their last legs, simply because what they print is out of date event before it hits the streets.

We on the other hand aim to create something different. Our website does cover breaking news stories, but our print edition will be covering and exploring the history behind the current news stories. For instance, the Syrian civil war did not just start, like mainstream media seems to be making everyone believe. The Syrian civil war has been boiling for some time now and it is only when you know and understand it’s history, that you can then begin to understand what is going on there currently and be able to come up with solutions to the problem.

It is our firm belief that the lack of historic context in current mainstream print media is the primary reason behind why many issues around the world seem ‘unfix-able’.

2. What is your biggest achievement over the past 12 months?

Our biggest achievement for the moment is hitting 1,300 views per day since last month. However, our biggest achievement, if it happens, will be when we go into print in 2014.

3. What is your biggest focus for the coming year?

Going into print and making that sustainable.

4. If you had to choose one top piece of advice for someone just starting out in business, or is currently operating within your industry sector, what would it be?

Do your research before you begin and don’t be shy when asking for help, it doesn’t matter if it sounds stupid or too big an ask. Our current capitalist system brands everyone as selfish and only interested in money, but human kind is a social creature and we naturally build communities and help those in need.

5. Can you share with us your view of the current landscape of business, in your region or generally, and where your organisation sits within it?

Hardly anyone has money and if they do they don’t want to use it. You have no idea how many meetings I have gone to and end up with the answer: “We don’t have the budget for that any more, if you came a generation earlier, we would have had no problem.”

We should not lie to the next generation, the economy has shrunk and jobs are hard to come by. The last generation had a lot more and had it a lot easier, but there is a silver lining.

Despite what the mainstream media is saying, we, the next generation, are more engaged and more proactive than ever before. We are thinking of new and dynamic ways of solving world and national problems. It seems like a strange thing to say, but the youth of today could hold the answers to many of the world’s problems. The road is hard and the economy is terrible, but if any generation could make a difference and change the world, it’ll be this one.
