Firms join forces to develop high-tech offshore vehicle

Two fabrication specialists have been appointed to a team developing a high-tech offshore vehicle.

Three North East firms are working on the innovative offshore wind cable laying vehicle, Hi-Traq.

IHC Engineering Business, based in Stocksfield, Northumberland, is working with Annfield Plain-based Dyer Engineering and PJ Engineering Products, of South Shields, in the creation of a demonstration vehicle, which will apply and introduce next generation technology for the trenching and laying of inter-array cables in offshore wind developments.

Dyer Engineering and PJ Engineering Products are both based in North East England and are experienced members of the energy sector supply chain.

PJ Engineering will fabricate the subsea vehicle’s chassis and track sides, while Dyer Engineering will deliver the steering leg, steering pivot, wishbones and bogies.

IHC, part of the global IHC Merwede group, will also work alongside the firms to develop their staff in the company’s required quality procedures.

IHC project manager Charlotte Pugh said: “Establishing a robust and experienced supply chain is an essential element in the development of new technology.

“Dyer Engineering and PJ Engineering Products have excellent credentials in this sector and we are pleased to form these new relationships, which will support the development of the Hi-Traq demonstration vehicle.”

Hi-Traq represents IHC’s continual investment in focused research and development, which has led to the creation of innovative new technology.

Glenn Whelam, production manager at PJ Engineering Products, said: “Hi-Traq will represent a milestone in the development of bespoke trenching technology for the offshore wind farm sector and we are very proud to be part of this exciting project.

“We have enjoyed considerable success in the subsea sector and we see offshore renewables as a market which we are keen to support.”

Dyer MD Graeme Parkins added: “This is an important project for Dyer Engineering as it will support our growth plans and the creation of new jobs.
