Infrastructure improvements will be a major boost for the North East

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) North East has welcomed the announcement of £64 million to improve the region’s roads.

The money, announced by transport minister Robert Goodwill, will see 12 projects start next year, including the upgrading of the A1 between Lobley Hill and the A184 Askew Road on Tyneside.

Penny Marshall, interim regional director of ICE North East said: “Any money to improve the North East’s transport infrastructure is very welcome but we are particularly pleased to see the news of the A1 work.

“The stretch of the A1 between Lobley Hill and the A184 is the nation’s third most congested route, so an upgrade is long overdue and will make a huge difference to commuters, visitors to Newcastle and Gateshead, and also hauliers using the A1.”

Funding has also been confirmed for other road and rail projects, including the Testo’s flyover where the A19 meets the A1058, and increased capacity on the East Coast Mainline.

Penny added: “Connectivity between the North East and the rest of the country is vital to our region’s economic growth, and the A1, A19 and East Coast Mainline are key routes for us, so we look forward to seeing the results of this investment.”
