LIPA awarded Investors in People Gold

THE Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) has received a prestigious business improvement award.

The Investors in People (IiP) Gold accolade was presented to LIPA after an IiP specialist last month looked at how effectively it operates and how it develops and manages its employees.

LIPA is now in the top 7 percent of UK organisations that are IiP accredited – and is thought to be the first specialist performing arts higher education institution in the UK to receive the Gold standard.

Co-founded in 1995 by Mark Featherstone-Witty and Sir Paul McCartney to prepare students for lasting careers in the performing arts industry, LIPA was judged on areas such as staff development, leadership, management and strategy, and performance measurement.

LIPA first became involved with IiP in 2004, when it was awarded the Investors in People ‘Standard’, the core benchmark of good practice in business improvement through people. In 2010, LIPA received Silver accreditation. 14,271 UK organisations are currently IiP accredited, of which 1,018, or 7 percent, hold the Gold standard.

Mark, founding principal/CEO of LIPA, commented:

“A truism that can’t be overstated is that no institution is more important than the people working in it. Since we live this, it’s good to have the recognition.“

As part of the assessment process, IiP conducted face-to-face interviews with managers and staff from across the organisation. The IiP specialist explored how staff and management communicate and how LIPA delivers its strategic objectives, among other areas.

Steve Burrows, managing director of idg, the official partner for Investors in People in the North of England said:

“Investors in People is all about developing people and helping them to realise their potential – supporting improved performance for the whole organisation.

“Of course, the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts will already know that every successful performance rests on a great team coming together with all their experience, drive and skills. So it is fantastic to see that they have achieved IiP Gold too, recognising that what makes a great show also makes a great organisation – people. Congratulations to all!“

LIPA is located in Sir Paul’s old school, the Liverpool Institute for Boys, which underwent a multi-million-pound renovation to turn it into a state-of-the-art performing arts higher education institution. It aims to provide the best teaching and learning for people who want to pursue a lasting career in the arts and entertainment industry, whether as performers or those who make performance possible.
