Law firm appoints two specialists

A law firm is strengthening its services to business with the appointment of two legal specialists.

Solicitor Mark Reeves has joined BHP Law as a commercial litigator and an expert in dispute resolution.

Paralegal Elspeth Livett has joined the commercial property and agriculture team at the firm and, along with Mark, will be based at the Teesside office at Preston Farm, Stockton.

Their appointments are the result of increasing caseloads and demand from new clients.

Mark, 26, who is a policeman’s son from Darlington, graduated in law from Northumbria University and completed his training contract with a firm in Newcastle before his move to BHP Law.

“I enjoy the contentious side of law, building up a case, assessing its strengths and weaknesses and ultimately achieving the best outcome for clients in a commercial sense,” he explained.

“That opportunity to resolve problems and help people is why I chose this area of law, which isn’t for everyone because it can be confrontational. It was great that BHP Law needed someone who specialises in this area and I’m really pleased to have joined the firm.”

Mark, who enjoys sailing and running in his spare time, is working under partner David Birks, who leads a growing litigation team on Teesside.

Horse lover Elspeth, 30, completed an equine management qualification and worked occasionally as a groom and riding instructor before graduating in law at King’s College, London.

She worked as a legal secretary and paralegal in residential and commercial property for a Newcastle firm before joining BHP Law’s Commercial & Agricultural Property team led by partner, Simon Robinson.

Elspeth, who comes from York, said: “My heart is in the countryside so I hope to be able to work with clients with rural businesses but I also have experience in commercial property matters for major corporate clients, so can help businesses of all sizes.”
