Self publisher? Don’t forget you’re also a self-promoter.
As a new author self publishing your first ebook, it’s important to remember that once the creative processes are complete you have a product to sell. It’s not enough to write an amazing novel and make it available in the Kindle store. It could be the best novel ever written, worthy of numerous awards and accolades – but if you don’t tell anyone about it, they will never know.
So here are a few tips to start getting noticed.
Social media. Facebook & Twitter are powerful and effective tools that you can use to build public support. You need to have an account on both of these platforms and network like crazy to build your followers. Just starting an account and shouting ‘hey, look at my new book’ isn’t enough. Building foundations and making friends is important – be genuine, encourage those within your network to spread the word.
Promote your book on Pinterest. Some authors feel out of their comfort zone on the very visual Pinterest. But there’s plenty you can do to promote your book visually. For example, create a board of books and images you used for inspiration, use images to show your creative processes, use images from your book or images that represent your story or show photo’s of people reading your book in different places.
Blogs, articles, niche networks, media. Get researching – look for blogs written by authors or publishers, look for magazines (on and offline) that feature new authors and ask if they can include you, look for groups and forums that discuss new books, approach a few book clubs and look for newspapers that feature new book reviews.
The thing to remember is you need to be as creative about your promotion as you are about your writing. And never be afraid to ask someone for help – big breaks can come from the strangest of places.
