Yotel plans for Manchester’s Piccadilly

The brand behind Yo! Sushi, as well as a revolutionary international hotel concept, have secured planning permission to build a 20-storey skyscraper in the centre of Manchester.

Yotel, which usually bases its affordable cabin-style hotels in and around airports, will extend its portfolio by building a 258-bedroom facility on land in the city’s Piccadilly area.

The development will centre on the regeneration of the former Union Bank Building, built in 1911 and designed by Thomas Worthington and Son. It has been empty since Barclays Bank vacated the site in 2006.

Plans for the new Yotel include a lounge bar and a kitchen, conference room, meeting rooms, office, gym and public toilets on the ground and first floor, with bedrooms on the second, third and fourth floor.

The scheme has been approved by Manchester council planning meeting.

Yotel claim the hotel will boost tourism and drive regeneration of adjoining sites, including the former Mayfield station and the Aytoun campus.

The whole site measures 0.07 hectares, and is bounded by Piccadilly, Gore Street and Chatham Street, with the Waldorf Public House and Indemnity House directly behind it. The land is opposite Stevenson Square Conservation Area and other Grade II-listed buildings including the Malmaison Hotel and The Grand Hotel.

Bruntwood, which owns a large land portfolio within the city centre, including 111 Piccadilly, said they are “very impressed with the quality of the proposed new building”.
